On Tuesday, December 11, Friends Seminary is hosting a People’s Supper, as part of a national initiative, which aims to bring the American citizenry together for dinner discussions. The founders of the People’s Supper began with the idea that what unites us is far greater than what divides us — a message we all need to embrace given the current climate on our American landscape.
Wanting to bring that belief to our school community, Upper School students from the Service Committee, The Power, Politics, and Citizenship class, and the RAAD club will serve as table facilitators at a Friends communal dinner that aims to explore our experiences and feelings around the rise of hate in our country. Our table talks will invite us to consider ways we can become beacons for connection rather than division. Hate and incivility aren’t just confined to our headlines or the pundits on our television screens or Twitter. We see their effects in our classrooms, our offices, our holiday reunions, and every time we choose to assume the worst in someone rather than the best. The good news? We can do something to fight hate and incivility around our family dinner tables and over casual meals shared with friends and neighbors and in the public places we inhabit everyday.
One dinner and discussion at a time, we can make a difference. So put away your phones for a few minutes. Go beyond “how was your day?” and one-word responses. Have the courage to share your feelings, and to listen as someone else shares theirs.
Those who attend The People’s Supper will make a pledge to listen deeply to one another. Food fosters conversation, and connections and common ground emerge organically. Each table will have student facilitators who will serve as hosts; providing prompts for table discussions and guidance on how best to listen across divides. This communal supper seeks participants from all our various constituency groups —students, parents, educators, and alumni.
